Remembering 9/11

I was just twelve years old when America was attacked by terrorists on September 11.  In 2001, the word "terrorism" was a word foreign to me, but in the last decade, I hear it almost every day. What transpired ten years ago today changed the world forever. At just twelve years old, I realized the world was not safe anymore.

Everybody remembers what they were doing and where they were when they first heard the news. When the reports of a terrorist attack first came through, it was late at night in Australia and I'd already gone to bed. The next morning, I had awoken up about 7am on September 12th. I went downstairs and poured myself some cereal. Ten minutes later, my dad walked into the room and turned on the TV. That's when I saw it. At first, I almost thought it was a movie, but then realization hit. I looked to my father and said, "Did all that happen in one day?" He confirmed it with a nod, and for a full hour that morning, my entire family watched the news, completely dumbfounded and angry about the images we were seeing. My mum said to me, "You'll always remember this day. You'll always remember this moment." And you know what? She was right. I still remember it.

To all those innocent people taken before their time, rest in peace.
